Thanks to the efforts of open source developers and modders, you can now play the original Half-Life on your Oculus Go. Well, sort of. Coincidentally, both now work on VR at Facebook. Carmack in particular was heavily involved in the creation of the Go headset. The fact that a game released in using a modified engine from can be played on a standalone VR headset from says mountains about the value of open source software. Hopefully the VR development community adopts more open source principles so 20 years from now we can play Superhot VR in the Holodeck.

Let me know what you think! Qix Posts: July Hi thanks for posting this. I'm getting an error though when trying to run it. Google says installing the. Thank you so much for this! I'm supposed to receive my Rift today, and Quake is the first full game I want to play on it after I try a bunch of demos first polygonal FPS game I ever played, and it was the game that made graphic accelerators a thing - seems fitting for it to be the first game I play on the Rift.

It seems to work just fine, here Win7 x64 and I have. NET Framework 4. Haven't been able to test Oculus functionality yet, of course, but I will report back sometime today. A dream come true! I spent a great deal of time with Quake and it's a real treat to get to experience it again this way.

AWESOME! Quake 2 with full roomcale on the Oculus Quest [Tutorial and Gameplay]

It's amazing how many of the secrets I remember after all these years. Works very well, although the controls could probably use some tweaking for the Rift. Oddly, this is probably the game that's made me the LEAST motion sick so far, even after playing through a few entire levels. First of all, thank you for this.

I never imagined old games like this would have a new lease on life. Very awesome. There's just one problem I have getting this to work right. All the lens correction seems to warp stuff to my right. I'm not sure how to describe it. You can kind of see it in your screenshot that you posted too. Or am I doing it wrong? Website: DrashVR.

Now all thats left are Doom and Duke 3D vr ports. Runs fine on my Win7 64 bit machine. Thanks for doing this. However, the warping is messed up somehow for me. When I turn my head, the whole world distorts making it unplayable. I tried several different resolutions. What resolution are you running?Quake for Oculus Quest just reached a whole new level. Ready Player One featured some incredibly iconic scenes of players running around in the real world while simultaneously playing as their avatars in the virtual world.

It's a scene that takes place a bit later in the movie, so we won't spoil the story for you if you haven't seen it, but it's one that developers have been trying to recreate ever since. One man's way of trying this out was to create a true-to-life scale arena in Quake for Oculus Quest, where every step in real life is mapped one-to-one with the steps in the virtual world. How is this possible? Only with the Oculus Quest, since it's the only system right now that can deliver virtual reality VR experiences of this fidelity without any wires or computers attached.

Once you've got an Oculus Quest, you'll need to install Sidequest to be able to experience games like Quake for Oculus Quest. Sidequest is a way to sideload your favorite classic PC first-person shooters, which have been ported to the Quest in a quick fashion, in addition to plenty of other free games and mods for hot titles like Beat Saber.

VR is already amazing, but this video illustrates just how amazing VR can be when paired with a proper room-scale setup or in this case, world-scale. In the video, you'll see the gentleman wearing the Oculus Quest moving about what appears to be a lightly-traveled backlot of a store. He's able to utilize all that open space to freely walk around a multiplayer arena in Quake for Oculus Quest.

A few bots populate the environment, and this video demonstrates the innate ability for VR to create something truly fantastic and magical in an otherwise ordinary, mundane space. While the setup is certainly complex, the Oculus Guardian system seems capable of handling incredibly large spaces without a blink.

You'll even see him going incredibly close to bushes, parked cars, and even shopping carts and rails without running into any physical obstacles.

This isn't the first time we've seen some amazing magic happening with room-scale setups on the Oculus Quest, either. Space Pirate Arena was recently shown off with amazing 4-player multiplayer functionality in a hide-and-seek style virtual arena, all taking place inside of a large garage area.

It's an experience only VR can provide and, even further, only a machine like the Oculus Quest is able to properly create in any space you need. We haven't seen much in the way of true competition in the fully-standalone VR space at this time.

HTC is offering up the Vive Focus Plus with similar specs to the Oculus Quest in many ways but hasn't made the impact that the Quest has with developers and consumers. Part of the problem is the lack of worldwide availability for the unit, matched with a considerably higher cost of entry when compared to the Quest.

HTC is debuting the Vive Cosmos in the very near future, which might also have the ability to run on its own, but isn't fully clear yet since all the details of the headset aren't yet known. What's next for the Oculus Quest? Plenty of good, that's for sure. It's been garnering loads of developer support since its launch in May and has regularly sold out in stores since then.

As of a recent survey in the industry, around one-third of developers are now creating games for the Oculus Quest, marking the fastest growth ever seen in the VR industry. Newsletter Signup. Sign up! In a video posted to Reddit yesterday, developers Dr. Beef and baggyG—the same team responsible for bringing Half-LifeQuakeand Quake 2 to VR via the Oculus Quest—teased the arrival of another classic franchise on standalone headsets.

While the game has already been available in VR for some time via DoomGVRthe 3DoF experience—originally released on the Samsung Gear VR followed by the Oculus Go and Oculus Quest—is a vanilla source port of the original game, resulting in a poorly-optimized, borderline broken experience.

Not only will this improve the overall visual quality of the experience, but allow for various mod support as well. This includes potential support for Brutal Dooma mod so popular that even horror icon John Romero praised it as the definitive version of the game. Noticeable improvements include comically over-the-top blood effects, the ability to blow off individual limbs with high-caliber weapons, and various lighting enhancements. I will not be held responsible for anyone making themselves ill. The 2nd release of Quake2Quest updates the underlying engine to Yamagi. You might think you need a complicated PC setup and an even more complicated set of modding tools to get this, but thankfully SideQuest is enabling this kind of functionality on the Oculus Quest with very little effort.

Sideloading apps is the perfect way of unlocking the full potential of your Oculus Quest, and it allows users to install free games and mods for existing games from the Oculus Store. You may or may not be aware that the Oculus Quest runs a custom version of Android under the hood.

As such, loading apps onto the Quest is done in a similar way to that of an Android phone. Sideloading was designed as a way for developers to test the apps and games they're creating, which means you need to sign up for a "developer" profile on the Oculus web site before beginning.

Don't worry, this is a free process and it requires little more than an email address to do it. Check out the easy-to-follow steps on the SideQuest website to get this done.

We're One Step Closer to Ready Player One in Quake for Oculus Quest

The latest update for SideQuest v0. Right now you'll still need to manually update SideQuest when an update is available, but the developer has all the pillars in place to make this an automated process in the near future. SideQuest gained its popularity from its ability to load the 'Beat On' suite of mods for Beat Saber, which gives Oculus Quest users the same freedom of modding and custom songs that they would find on the PC version of Beat Saber.

If anything, the Quest version of these mods is easier to use because it requires no file management and can be handled from within the Quest headset itself, unlike the PC version which requires interaction with the desktop UI before jumping into VR.

This latest version of SideQuest allows for enhanced 'Beat On' functionality by providing mods straight from the SideQuest store, with easy search and filter functionality, large thumbnails, and simple descriptions of exactly what you're looking for.

Want Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsaber while trying to slice through Camellia's latest songs? How about new colors for blocks and walls? It's a single click away with SideQuest.

Or how about playing some classic PC first-person shooters in VR? There are tons of other fully-free titles on here as well, and lots of community support and a dedicated developer is making SideQuest better all the time.
